Google is integrating its Gemini AI into services like Gmail. This system automatically scans the content of your emails - including text, attachments, and even travel or purchase information - to:
-
Suggest smart replies (Smart Reply)
-
Summarize emails
-
Automatically identify events
-
Train its own AI models
This raises several important points:
-
Even if data is "anonymized", the private content of your correspondence is still processed by algorithms.
-
These features are usually enabled by default, and many users are unaware they're active.
-
The AI analyzes not only the content but also your communication patterns.
-
The more you use these features, the harder it becomes to leave Google's ecosystem.
To disable this service, follow these steps:
On a computer:
-
Log into Gmail.
-
Click the gear icon (Settings).
-
Select "See all settings."
-
Go to the "General" tab.
-
Find the "Smart features and personalization" section.
-
Uncheck the "Enable smart features" option.
On mobile (Android/iOS):
-
Open the Gmail app.
-
Tap the three-line menu icon.
-
Go to Settings and select your account.
-
Turn off the "Smart features and personalization" option.
To enhance your privacy further, you can also review and adjust settings in your Google Account's "Data & privacy" section.
